About ASCII art and text art

ASCII art is a picture made only from characters you can type: letters, digits, punctuation and a few symbols. Because it is plain text, you can copy it from this page and paste it into a message, a code comment, a forum signature or a text file without uploading an image. The gallery is grouped into categories, and each piece has a copy button.

ASCII art depends on spacing, so how it looks depends on where you paste it. It is designed for a monospace (fixed-width) font, where every character takes the same width. In a normal proportional font the lines stop lining up and the picture falls apart. Chat apps such as Discord keep the layout if you wrap the art in a code block (three backticks before and after it); other apps may collapse repeated spaces or wrap long lines, which also breaks it.

A few habits help: pick smaller pieces for phones, because long lines wrap on a narrow screen; paste into a code block or a plain-text field when you can; and preview the result before you post it publicly. Short one-line faces, often called kaomoji, are the exception, since they have no layout to lose and work almost anywhere. For single symbols and emoji, see the symbol collection, and for styled letters try the font generator.
