Hand Gestures

Hand emoji say a lot in very little space: a thumbs up for agreement, a wave for a greeting, clapping hands for applause. They copy and paste like any other Unicode character.

Many of them come in five skin tone variants. A skin tone is added with a separate modifier character (U+1F3FB to U+1F3FF) placed right after the hand, so a toned hand is really two characters joined together. If the modifier is not supported, you may see the plain hand followed by a colored square.

Practical Tips

  • The same gesture can mean different things in different countries. Something friendly in one place can be rude in another, so think about your audience before using it in a public post.
  • The folded-hands emoji is used both for “thank you” and for prayer. Context decides which one you mean.
  • A skin tone variant counts as more than one character in length-limited fields such as bios.
  • Unsure about a gesture? Add a few words next to it so the meaning is never left to the emoji alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a gesture with a different skin tone?

Copy the default hand and add a skin tone with your phone’s emoji keyboard, or choose a toned version if the collection has one. The tone is a separate modifier character attached to the hand.

Why does my gesture show a colored square next to it?

The device does not support skin tone modifiers for that emoji, so it shows the hand and the modifier separately. Updating the system usually fixes it.

Are hand emoji safe to use everywhere?

They paste fine almost everywhere, but their meaning varies by culture. For international audiences, stick to widely understood ones.
