Special Characters
This category collects characters that are hard to find on a keyboard: the copyright sign ©, the registered mark ®, the trademark sign ™, the section sign §, the pilcrow ¶, daggers, bullets and similar marks. They appear in legal text, product names, footers and documents.
Most of these exist in every common font, so they paste reliably. On Windows you can type some of them with Alt codes on the numeric keypad (Alt + 0169 for ©, Alt + 0174 for ®, Alt + 0153 for ™), and in HTML they have named entities such as © and ®.
Practical Tips
- Put the trademark sign right after the name it belongs to, and the copyright sign before the year in a footer (© 2026).
- Use the real characters instead of lookalikes such as (c). They look cleaner and are read correctly by assistive tools.
- In HTML, use the character itself with UTF-8 encoding, or the named entity if your system cannot handle UTF-8.
- Copying from a document can bring along hidden formatting. If a symbol looks odd after pasting, paste it as plain text.
How to Use Special Characters
- Click on any symbol to copy it to your clipboard.
- Open the app or website where you want to use it.
- Paste it with Ctrl+V (Windows) or Cmd+V (Mac).
- Check how it looks: the final appearance depends on the font of the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type © on a keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0169 on the numeric keypad. On a Mac with a US layout, Option + G. Or copy it from this page.
What is the difference between ® and ™?
® is used for registered trademarks and ™ for unregistered marks. Use ® only if the mark is actually registered.
Will these characters display correctly everywhere?
Yes in almost all cases, since they are in virtually every font.
How symbols look depends on the font and system of each device. We have not tested them on every device. Updated: October 2026
